The website of the UK children’s comic The Beano describes itself as “100% safe for children”—but is its junk food-related content doing more harm than good?
An investigation by The BMJ shows how The Beano’s website—promoted as a digital hub for 6- to 12-year-olds—showcases products from well-known brands that are harmful to children, including fast food, confectionery, soft drinks and ultra-processed food.

A Jan. 25 report by the U.K government showed the risks of serious adverse effects from mRNA COVID-19 vaccines largely outweigh the benefits, according to John Campbell, Ph.D., who analyzed the U.K. data used for the report.
U.K. health officials knew about the data in October 2022, but didn’t change their recommendations for the shots until the day they released the report and announced they will no longer recommend COVID-19 boosters for healthy people under 50.
They also said they will discontinue free distribution of the primary two-shot series.

A massive international research collaboration that analyzed several dozen rigorous studies focusing on “physical interventions” against COVID-19 and influenza found that they provide little to no protection against infection or illness rates.
The study, published in the peer-reviewed Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, is the strongest science to date refuting the basis for mask mandates worldwide.

Cartier Woods, a senior on the Detroit Northwestern boys basketball team, went into cardiac arrest during a game Tuesday night and is on life support, according to Nikolai Vitti, superintendent of Detroit Public Schools Community District.
“He was administered CPR and was rushed to Henry Ford Hospital,” Vitti said in an email circulating on social media. “As of this email he is on life support and the next 24 hours are critical to his survival. With permission from Cartier Woods’ legal guardian, his aunt, I send this email to you requesting your prayers, thoughts and/or well wishes for his recovery.”

California is experiencing the worst affordable housing shortage in the nation—and, not coincidentally, the country’s largest and most visible homelessness crisis as well. But rather than address the root of this crisis, the landed gentry and other special interest groups who largely run state politics have demanded aggressive action to sweep aside its most conspicuous symptoms. Some conservative-leaning elected officials have responded by proposing acts of outright cruelty, like shipping the unhoused out of town entirely.

A federal judge questioned the new California law that penalizes doctors for sharing COVID-19 “misinformation.”
The new law, which came into effect on January 1 this year, prohibits doctors from spreading what the state deems to be misinformation to patients, or risk being penalized for “unprofessional conduct,” which could result in their licenses being revoked.

The USDA has finally finished a long-awaited rule that will help clean up fraud in the organic food sector.
This rule, put together by the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), is urgently needed given widespread fraud that has been reported in the organics industry. The level of deception has reached epidemic proportions: a USDA study found that 40% of all organic food sold in the US tested positive for prohibited pesticides. The rule takes a number of positive steps that, if properly implemented, will help restore some consumer confidence in the organics industry.

Direct-to-consumer drug advertising increased by nearly 5-fold from 1997 to 2016, with 663 000 television commercials reported in 2016. Television advertisements account for roughly two-thirds of total direct-to-consumer advertising spending.1 Direct-to-consumer advertising is associated with use of higher-cost drugs over generics and less expensive alternatives.2 Proponents have argued that such advertising improves public health by promoting clinically beneficial prescribing. We assessed the therapeutic value (ie, whether they represent advances over existing treatments) of drugs subject to most direct-to-consumer television advertising from 2015 to 2021.

New studies from Sweden, China, Australia and the U.K. shed light on human exposure to electromagnetic radiation from wireless technologies, but the authors of one study alleged industry tried to censor their research, and in another case, critics accused researchers of having conflicts of interest with the telecom industry.
In the first example, an international peer-reviewed journal — Annals of Case Reports — on Jan. 10 published a Swedish case report showing 5G radiation causes symptoms indicative of “microwave syndrome.”
The telecom industry initially attempted to censor the article, the study authors said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week said it found an increased risk of ischemic stroke in people age 65 and older who received Pfizer’s COVID-19 bivalent booster — but the agency omitted key information needed in order to accurately assess the risk versus benefit of getting the vaccine.

New research from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King’s College London has found evidence of small hemorrhages in the brain tissue of fetuses during the peak of COVID-19 cases in the UK.
The research, published in Brain, found that the hemorrhages are linked to a reduction in blood vessel integrity. The cause of these hemorrhages is unclear, however possible explanations might be as a direct consequence of the infection or an indirect consequence of the maternal immune response. The study suggests that COVID-19 might affect the fetal brain during the earliest stages of gestation, highlighting a need for further study into the potential impact on subsequent neurological development….

Covid is a controversial and emotive topic. People hold strong views often based on bitter or difficult personal experiences. In the midst of the pandemic there were no perfect solutions but experts and officials worked under intense pressure to provide their advice to government. A broad array of recommendations covering numerous issues needed to be synthesized into coherent pandemic policies for approval by Cabinet.
