The Israeli army is closing in on completing its plans for an assault on the Gaza Strip’s southern city of Rafah, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on 23 April.
WSJ cites Egyptian officials as saying that Israel’s plan to evacuate civilians from the city will take two to three weeks and will be carried out in cooperation with Washington, Cairo, and other Arab states, including the UAE.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi stated on 18 October that Israel is not seeking to defeat Hamas militarily, but to push Gaza’s civilians to seek refuge in Egypt.
Sisi made the comments in response to criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The prime minister complained that Egypt is not opening the Rafah Crossing to allow Palestinians to flee Israeli bombing to Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.

Egyptian authorities trying to mediate the war between Israel and Palestinian factions say that their words of caution to Tel Aviv fell on deaf ears.

Most mornings as I prepare for my run, I tune in to BBC news. Of late, the newscaster has presented, in sober British-fashion, the number of Palestinians killed the night before by the Israeli army in its near-nightly raids on homes and refugee camps in the occupied Palestinian Territories. When I canvass American news sites to learn more, there is no mention of these atrocities. The airwaves are replete, however, with news of the Russia-Ukraine war and the death of civilians.

Egypt’s annual urban consumer inflation rate in February leapt to a higher-than-expected 31.9 percent, its highest in five and a half years, from 25.8 percent in January, data from statistics agency CAPMAS showed on Thursday.
The soaring inflation follows a series of currency devaluations starting in March 2022, a prolonged shortage of foreign currency and continuing delays in getting imports into the country.
