Cloudflare says White House Asked Tech Firm to Bypass Iran Censorship, but US Sanctions got in the Way – CNN 1/19/23

A senior White House official asked US tech company Cloudflare to help circumvent internet censorship in Iran after protests erupted in that country last September but US sanctions prevented the firm from doing so, Cloudflare CEO Mathew Prince said Thursday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

“I got a call from a senior official in the White House who said, ‘Can you do in Iran what you’re doing in Russia?’” said Prince, whose company makes software that protects users from cyberattacks and allows activists in authoritarian regimes to bypass censorship, during a panel discussion on security and technology. “And I said, ‘No.’ And [they] said, ‘Why not?’ And I said, ‘Because sanctions prevented us from ever putting our equipment in Iran.’”

International money transfers are far from private according to findings by The Wall Street Journal and Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR).

Law enforcement in the US can access international money transfer details without a warrant through a controversial surveillance program the Arizona attorney general’s office approved in 2014.

They could do nothing at all. They could sabotage the bots and self-driving cars and autonomous armed drones that will drive us to the unemployment line before blowing off our heads. I do not know what the fact that A.I. scientists roll up their sleeves and do their best to render us all redundant and obsolete demonstrates about our psychological wiring, but it cannot be good.

Delta Airlines has combined its airport face biometrics with in-flight personalization in a new platform dubbed Delta Sync.

Those that choose to opt-in to having their face scanned get more “convenient” features such as “seamless baggage drop, security, and boarding without the hassle of pulling out their ID or boarding pass.”

Delta will be using customers’ face biometrics to “check in” passengers and match their faces to their digital ID, which will include passport and TSA PreCheck.

The First Amendment cannot be the whole answer to the problem, however, and, in fact, may not have even been transgressed. I experienced my first Big Tech censorship in the first week of July 2015, when from one day to the next, my website was 90% demonetized by Google AdSense.

AdSense had comprised 100% of my income for the previous 5 years and there were no alternatives to Google back then, so this was catastrophic for me.

There was no reason given and there was no recourse. I was simply ghosted by the Google employees who used to help me optimize my ad revenue, in which Google had shared 32%.

Did someone say election day was a “great day for democracy”? Maybe it was in states such as Florida, Tennessee, and Missouri. They welcomed eligible in-person voters, also offered absentee paper ballots with proper safeguards, counted votes quickly, and reported totals on election night and the next day.

Election results in those states were not totally unpredictable. Most reasonably corresponded to prior polling, midterm election patterns, and voter expectations.

But in other states such as Arizona, Nevada, and Pennsylvania, it was a great day for compromising democracy. They seemed to care more about collecting ballots than counting real votes or serving real voters, some of whom they turned away.
