The Catholic Church teaches that She, the Mystical Body of Christ, will endure a Passion like Christ did (Catechism, pars. 675-77).

It’s quite unlike various Protestant views that what they call “the church” will somehow have something more triumphantly prepared for Christ’s return – a view very much like the Jews, many of whom believe they must attain a certain level of “worthiness” for Messiah to appear.

Many Fathers, popes, saints, theologians, etc. have said the Church will be in Her worst earthly state ever prior to the appearance of Antichrist. This of course will be at the same time the Church Triumphant in Heaven will be nearing its completion by the coming in of all the elect throughout history.

In his new apostolic exhortation, Laudate Deum, Pope Francis warns us that the end is near, both for “our suffering planet” and, by extension, for us. “[T]he world in which we live is collapsing and may be nearing the breaking point,” he writes. “[I]t is indubitable that the impact of climate change will increasingly prejudice the lives and families of many persons.”

On September 13, 2023 media reports across the world exclaimed aloud that ancient aliens were discovered in Peru and presented to the Mexican Congress by a team of valiant researchers led by a journalist named Jose Jaime Maussan. The language used in the headlines across mainstream press agencies expressed absolute certainty leaving media consumers to believe that the claims of tiny three-fingered alien bodies with DNA far removed from the human species were true.

By this time, the minds of citizens were well-prepared to accept these claims uncritically as we had already been told by the Pentagon in 2020 that ‘off-world vehicles made of material not from this earth’ had been in the hands of government agencies for decades. We had been told by Pentagon insiders that alien bodies had been dissected by government scientists since the 1940s, and we had been told by major press agencies that UFOs had clashed with intrepid American fighter jets in February 2023.

If you take the coordinated messaging across all media platforms seriously, and believe what these experts are saying, then it would appear that a grand new hypothesis for the origins of humanity is on the tip of our fingertips making Hollywood films like Ridley Scott’s Prometheus and Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey more factual than anyone anticipated.

But was any of this ever true? How can we know?

Switzerland Parliament Approves Burqa Ban – Middle East Eye 9/21/23

Switzerland’s parliament has approved a ban on face coverings in legislation thought to be targeting Muslim women wearing burqas and niqabs.

The country’s lower parliamentary chamber voted overwhelmingly in favour of the bill on Wednesday, which was passed with 151 votes in favour and 29 against.

The upper chamber had previously approved the ban, which was strongly supported by the right-wing Swiss People’s Party.

My relationship to organized religion has always been to meet it with skepticism. These days, to my surprise, people want to talk to me about evil.

In a Substack essay last year, and in my book The Bodies of Others, I raised a question about existential, metaphysical darkness.

I concluded that I had looked at the events of the past two and a half years using all of my classical education, my critical thinking skills, my knowledge of Western and global history and politics; and that, using these tools, I could not explain the years 2020-present.

Indeed I could not explain them in ordinary material, political or historical terms at all.

This is not how human history ordinarily operates.

Of course, a more appropriate Christian reply would be based on the command that we are to love our enemies, but as most of us still haven’t successfully worked through the love God and love our neighbors part, this is much to ask at the moment.  But I digress.
