The Pentagon announced on 27 October that US warplanes conducted midnight air raids in Syria’s Deir Ezzor governorate, allegedly targeting two storage facilities used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
“These precision self-defense strikes are a response to a series of ongoing and mostly unsuccessful attacks against US personnel in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-backed militia groups,” US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement.
“We don’t seek to widen or escalate the crisis,” Austin claimed. However, his statement says: “Iran wants to hide its hand and deny its role in these attacks against our forces. We will not let them. If attacks by Iran’s proxies against US forces continue, we will not hesitate to take further necessary measures to protect our people.”
A senior US official told reporters early on Friday that the Pentagon did not coordinate the airstrikes in Syria in advance with Israel. “These strikes have nothing to do with Israel or the conflict in Gaza,” the official claimed….
