The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on 29 August suspended a three-year prison sentence issued earlier this month against former prime minister Imran Khan and set bail for his release.
Nonetheless, his lawyers confirmed that the popular Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party leader is still barred from taking part in elections or holding public office until the higher courts overturn the trial court’s verdict.
Khan’s release from prison came after an IHC panel of judges accepted his appeal against his three-year jail sentence, issued on 5 August on charges of misusing his role as prime minister from 2018 to 2022 to buy and sell gifts in state possession that were received during visits abroad worth more than 140 million Pakistani rupees ($635,000).
